Digging http://digg.com/educational/ParaModal can help my brother get extra credit. The prof will grant extra credit to the student with a #1 google hit, so blogging it or anything else that will boost it's pagerank would be cool too. :)

Here's his site.

Nov. 25th, 2007 @ 05:56 pm iPod
I bought an 15GB iPod back in March 2004, and with the exception of declining battery capacity, I've been pretty happy with it. Earlier this year it started having odd problems. Sometimes the screen won't update properly and it ends up being unreadable. Sometimes the screen won't wake from sleep. It will play and the backlight will rutn on, but I can't see anything. Sometimes the sound will drop out, but the display continues updating. Sometimes it will stop playing a song and go to the next one or sometimes completely crash. It will consistently crash on particular songs or albums. I've tried reformatting the drive in hopes it was a disk error that would be resolved by getting bad sectors marked unusable, but it didn't help.

I've kept hoping it would hold out until the iPod touch came out, but now that it is, I'm underwhelmed. Thankfully, my younger brother had an unused 60GB iPod Photo the he receive from our older brother when he got a new one. It's just a few months newer than mine, but it's a lot nicer! When he came over for Thanksgiving he brought it over and I started setting it up.

It was setup as a winPod, so I did a complete "factory restore" from inside iTunes. At this point the scroll wheel stopped working. On the *new* iPod! Everything else worked, and nothing I tried fixed the scollwheel. I tried installing podlinux and rockbox, but podlinux had kernel panics and rockbox refused to recognize it after I completed the requisite conversion to a winPod.

So I googled. Eventually, I found a forum comment whee someone mentioned that he had once been able to solve this problem by toggling the hold switch, but it wasn't helping his current situation. I also looked that Apple's docs, and noticed that they list toggling the hold switch as the first step in performing a soft reset.

It worked. Go figure. I wish I would have thought of that a day earlier.

I figure this is a largely unknown iPod troubleshooting tip, so I'm giving it a tiny bit more press here.

Oct. 3rd, 2007 @ 10:17 pm leadership video
I need to take to class (in six days) a 2-7 minute video clip that demonstrates leadership. The leadership can be good or bad. In class we watched an episode of "The Office", which was full of great examples of bad leadership. I can use VHS, DVD, or a computer (even youtube) file. Any suggestions?

You may have heard of Change a Light, Change the World. We found out today that the mayor of Champaign wants to change a light bulb in our house for the event. And it will be televised! Joy. While I suspect we were selected due to our participation in the city's Full Home Rehab program, I don't think the two things are directly linked. We're trying to gracefully decline; I'll let you know how it goes.

We got two eight year old cats (female) a week or two ago, but I'm just getting around to posting pics and asking for help renaming them. The tabby was named "Misfit" (Missy) and the calico was "Little Bit" (Bit). Not only do we not like the names but they don't seem to fit the cats at all. We'd like to name them something that sounds similar to their original names, but it's probably not too critical. I thought we might name the Dizzy and Bird, but Alice doesn't seem to like that. If we don't come up with something soon they may be "Tabby" and "Calico".:)

Earlier in the summer I bought a cyclometer to help measure the calories I was burning on my rides to and from work (and elsewhere). I've also been using it to provide some objective numbers with which I can pace myself.

It's not unusual for me to hit a top speed of 20-something with an average of 12-something, but my avg all week has been >14. Yesterday I set a new record for the 3 mile trip home: top speed 31.5, avg speed 15.5.

Many of you won't be the slightest surprised to hear that Elizabeth has always been keenly interested in keys and locks. We have a few photos somewhere of her trying to "pick" a padlock.

Alice and the girls just stopped by my office to drop off the week's lunch supplies. I thought Elizabeth had been in sight the whole time, but as we were leaving she dropped a set of keys she had apparently grabbed out of one of the other desks in my room. Alice looked at me, shook her head, and simply said "Kender".
May. 10th, 2006 @ 04:00 pm Why Blogger?
I've had several friends start using Blogger, but I can't figure out why.

Here's a quick list of the features it appears that Blogger is lacking compared to LJ:

spell check
threaded replies
friends lists
friends page
flexible viewing restrictions (per post)
flexible posting restrictions (per post)
email notification

Is there more?

I wouldn't think these would be difficult features to implement, especially for a powerhouse like Google. So what's going on? What advantages does Blogger offer?

I loved "V for Vendetta" in trade paperback. How's the movie? Ebert liked it, but I found his review uncharacteristicly unconvincing. The trailers look to be riddled with overt (and mood-inappropriate) Matrix-y special effects.

What's the word?

I need to bicycle more. I'm looking for someone in CU that will commit to spending a couple of evenings a week cycling out on the prairie. I'm still out of shape, so I'm thinking to Mahomet and back as a start (20 miles). Not that I'm set on Mahomet, but it's an example of what I'm thinking of.

It's been years since I've done serious cycling, so it's possible I won't manage Mahomet. We'll just have to find out.

"Tradition means giving votes to the most obscure of all classes, our ancestors. It is the democracy of the dead. Tradition refuses to submit to that arrogant oligarchy who merely happen to be walking around." -
G.K. Chesterton, "Orthodoxy", 1908

I tend to disregard the value of tradition more than I believe I ought, and this quote has provided food for thought.

Muddy died yesterday evening. We heard him meowing outside and found him lying on our porch. He had no visible problems and had happily chased his toy mouse earlier in the day, so we have no idea what happened. Hopefully the autopsy will turn up something. I'm doing fine, but Alice is sad, and Elizabeth seems to have noticed his absence.

Interested in third party politics?

There will be a debate between the US Senatorial candidates seeking to fill the seat soon to be vacated by Peter Fitzgerald (R). It will take place from 3PM to 5PM on Sun (Jan 25) at the Champaign city council chamber (102 North Neil).

Libertarian candidate for U.S. Senate Jerry Kohn will be included in the debate, along with Republicans Gen. John Borling, Dr. Chirinjeev Kathuria, Andy McKenna, Jim Oberweis, Sen. Steve Rauschenberger, Jack Ryan and Jonathan Wright; and Democrats Joyce Washington and
Nancy Skinner.

Apparently this is the first time an Illinois Libertarian candidate for statewide office has ever been included in a debate with major-party candidates and major media coverage. I don't know if the Greens or other third parties have ever been included. (Heck, for all I know the Greens may have a candidate here too! :) Maybe I've been under a rock, but I dont'think this sort of thing happens very often in CU.

Participants will be questioned by a panel of reporters from WAND (ABC), WCIA (CBS), WICD (NBC), and the News Gazette editorial board.

Anyone interested in playtesting a couple of games that I created while researching Game Theory for a class? I'm hoping to get them published in the next edition of the book we used for that class.

It shouldn't take more than a few minutes to run through each game, and I think that they are simple, fun, and interesting. The games each have four players. If I get only three volunteers I can play as well, if we get four I can sit out. If I have more than four volunteers then multiple people can team up to act as a single "player", so you could even invite anyone that you think might be interested. Of course, introducing teams makes things take a bit longer (not much) as teammates negotiate a course of action.

Anyone interested?

I'm a time traveler stuck here in 2003. Upon arriving here my dimensional warp generator stopped working. I trusted a company here by the name of LLC Lasers to repair my Generation 3 52 4350A watch unit, and they fled on me. I am going to need a new DWG unit, prefereably the rechargeable AMD wrist watch model with the GRC79 induction motor, four I80200 warp stabilizers, 512GB of SRAM and the menu driven GUI with front panel XID display.

I will take whatever model you have in stock, as long as its received certification for being safe on carbon based life forms.

In terms of payment:
I dont have any Galactic Credits left. Payment can be made in platinum gold or 2003 currency upon safe delivery of unit. Please transport unit in either a brown paper bag or box to below coordinates on Sunday July 27th at (exactly 3:00pm) Eastern Stand Time. If you miss this timeframe please email me.

42.4845467 & Longitude -71.1576157 and the ground is 101.3' above sea level.

Although those coordinates are a secure guarded area, these channels through email are never secure. Unfortunately it is the only form of communication I have right now. There is a good chance that sombody will try to redirect the signal. The unit must be teleported directly in a way that nobody will be able to interfere with the transference.

After unit has been sent please email me at: info@federalfundingprogram.com
with payment instructions. Do not reply directly back to this email.

Thank You
